Outlets for beef farming
The principle of suckler farming is to rear cows to produce calves for meat. The milk is therefore destined for the calves.
Some breeders specialise in "birthing" animals, others in "finishing or fattening", and many breeders practise both professions (breeder and fattener).
Several products are derived from suckler farming:
Calves are mainly reared to give meat from young or young bulls, fattened up to around 18 months of age.
Heifers (young female animals) are fattened up until an average age of three years.
Calves are "reared under the mother": they are fattened on milk to produce white meat by the age of 8 months.
Cull cows (which will no longer produce calves) are fattened up for consumption.
Beef production in France
57,000 farms in France have at least 5 suckler cows, and the suckler cow herd stood at 3,826,000 animals in 2020.
This herd is mainly located around the Massif Central (Nouvelle-Aquitaine and Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes regions).
