Discovering wine estates in Bordeaux

The most famous wine estates in Bordeaux

The vineyards of Bordeaux (in Gironde in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region) are undoubtedly the most famous in the world, and you've already heard of some of the finest Grands Crus in this beautiful region. These include :

  • Médoc: Château Mouton Rothschild, Château Margaux, Château Latour and Château Lafite Rothschild
  • Graves: Château Haut-Brion and Château Pape-Clément
  • Libournais: Château Cheval Blanc and Château Pétrus

Varying in size, these prestigious wine estates produce some of the most famous and sought-after wines in the world. They generate a reputation that benefits the whole department.

The Bordeaux vineyards

But there's more to the Bordeaux wine region than just a few inaccessible grands crus.

Its 7 regions (Médoc, Blayais, Côtes-de-Bourg, Libournais, Entre-deux Mers, Graves and Sauternais) cover more than 110,000 hectares of vines in nearly 60 appellations (AOP), including the best-known: Médoc, Graves, Sauternes, Saint-Emilion, Pomerol, Fronsac, Entre-deux Mers, Blaye, Sauternes, ..... Not forgetting, of course, the Bordeaux and Bordeaux Supérieur appellations, which can be produced throughout the Bordeaux vineyards.

The Gironde vineyards produce their wines from a wide range of red grape varieties, including Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Carbenet Franc, Malbec, Côt and Petit Verdot. As well as varieties used to make white wines: Sauvignon, Semillon, Muscadelle, Ugni Blanc and Colombard.

Every year, between 5 and 7 million hectolitres of wine are produced, the vast majority of them red, 300,000 hectolitres of white, 200,000 hectolitres of rosé (89%) and a small quantity of Crémant de Bordeaux. These wines are sold in France (57% by 2020) and internationally (43% by 2020).

With almost 10,000 vineyards, the Bordeaux wine region includes a large number of châteaux, so there's something for everyone.
