Goat farming

The goat was domesticated 10,000 years ago in Iran.

Today, goats are a common sight in France, particularly in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region for milk production.

Goat farming in France is mainly geared towards the production of milk for cheese, although there is a market for goat's milk.

Goatmeat production is marginal, although goatmeat is available at Easter and locally in the Alps (smoked adult goatmeat).

Leather production is also an outlet, as is wool production (angora, cashmere, mohair).

Goat's milk production is marketed in a variety of ways: to cooperative or private dairies, direct sales with or without a processing plant.

Around 7,800 goat farms in France have at least 10 goats:

  • 48% deliver milk (79% of production)
  • 47% produce cheese (15% of production)
  • 5% are mixed farms (6% of production)
  • The average goat produces 925 litres of milk a year, or 3 litres a day.

Goats lamb at the end of winter or in spring, triggering lactation which lasts until the kid is weaned.
