Languedoc-Roussillon wine-growing departments

The Languedoc-Roussillon vineyards are located in 4 départements: Aude, Gard, Hérault and Pyrénées-Orientales in the Occitanie region.

On the Languedoc side, it runs along the Mediterranean Sea from Nîmes to the Etang de Leucate. It covers the Gard, Hérault and Aude departments, and includes the towns of Narbonne, Carcassonne, Montpellier and Nîmes.

On the Roussillon side, the vineyards stretch from the south of the Etang de Leucate to the Spanish border. It is therefore exclusively located in the Pyrénées-Orientales.

The terroir and climate of the Languedoc-Roussillon vineyards

The terroir

With vineyards spread over 4 départements, the terroir is highly diverse. It includes : 

  • mountainous areas
  • stony hillsides
  • alluvial plains
  • Mediterranean coastline

There is a wide variety of soils: schist, rolled pebbles, limestone and granitic arenas.

The climate

The region enjoys a temperate Mediterranean climate, although it is influenced by the ocean near Carcassonne. It is characterised by high temperatures in summer and heavy rainfall in autumn and spring. It is also strongly influenced by the wind (tramontane, etc.), which protects the vines from cryptogamic pressures.

Appellations and grape varieties in the Languedoc-Roussillon vineyards

The Languedoc-Roussillon wine region has 26 AOC appellations, including: - Banyuls, Cabardès, Clairette du Languedoc, Collioure, Corbières, Côtes du Roussillon, Crémant de Limoux, Faugères, Fitou, ... 

And 26 PGI appellations, for example: Ariège, Aude, Cévennes, Côte Vermeille, Gard, Vallée du Paradis, etc. 

The Languedoc-Roussillon vineyards have many red grape varieties, including Grenache, Mourvèdre, Syrah, Carignan and Cinsault. White varieties include bourboulenc, grenache blanc, marsanne and roussanne. 

Over 1 million hectolitres of wine are produced each year, the vast majority of which are red and sweet wines (85%) and white and dry wines (15%).

Since the 1980s, the vineyard has undergone significant change, with a reduction in the area planted, an undeniable improvement in quality, and an evolution in production methods (organic, biodynamic, natural wines, etc.).
