14,000 farms in France produce poultry France is the leading poultry producer in Europe, ahead of the UK and Germany. Production is mainly located in Brittany (33%) and the Pays de la Loire (30%). Production mainly concerns chickens, turkeys, ducks, guinea fowl, geese, etc.
Several types of farming are present in France:
- Industrial rearing in hen houses, mainly of the Leghorn breed.
- Semi-industrial or farm rearing (AOC, Label Rouge, Agriculture Biologique; ...): poultry reared according to precise specifications, often including compulsory outside circulation.
- Farming: small-scale poultry in the midst of other production on the farm.
The poultry houses can also be used for laying chicks (for meat poultry farms, or laying hen farms), pullet production (rearing chicks to laying age) and breeding poultry production.
Production poultry houses are classified according to the type of ventilation: static (Louisiana type or skylight), dynamic (Colorado type).
The sale of a poultry farm will include poultry houses with or without a range area or farmland, livestock and crop equipment and possibly a house.
