The landscapes of the Rhône Valley vineyards

Climate

The Rhône Valley wine region boasts a diversity of climates influenced by its varied geography. It is characterised by 2 distinct types of climate: a continental climate in the north and a Mediterranean climate in the south.

In the northern part of the Rhône Valley, the climate is moderately continental. Summers are hot and sunny, but autumns are cooler and winters harsher than in the southern zone.

The southern zone has a typically Mediterranean climate. Summers here are relatively hot and dry, while winters are mild and sunny, sometimes marked by the Mistral wind that blows through the Rhône valley.

These varied climatic conditions are ideal for growing vines.

Soil diversity

The region's terroirs are characterised by four types of rock: granite, silica (in the form of sand), clay and limestone.

In the north, the soils are mainly clay, pebbles and granite, while in the south there are clay, pebbles, limestone and sandy soils. This diversity of soils contributes to the richness of the Rhone Valley terroirs, giving the wines produced in this region distinct and unique characteristics.

Appellations and grape varieties in the Rhône Valley vineyards

Here are the different local wine appellations in the heart of the Rhône Valley: Côte-rôtie, Condrieu, Château-grillet, Saint-joseph, Cornas, Saint-péray, Hermitage, Crozes-Hermitage.

The vineyards of the Rhône Valley offer a wealth of grape varieties. There are 12 white varieties, including Bourboulenc, Clairette, Grenache blanc, Maccabeo, Marsanne, Muscat blanc, Picardan, Picpoul blanc, Roussanne, Ugni Blanc, Vermentino and Viognier.

There are also 15 red grape varieties, including Calitor, Carignan, Cinsault, Clairette rose, Counoise, Grenache gris, Grenache noir, Marselan, Mourvèdre, Muscardin, Muscat noir, Picpoul noir, Syrah, Terret noir and Vaccarèse.

The Rhône Valley is France's second-largest wine-growing region in terms of the volume of AOC wines produced, just behind Bordeaux.

Each year, this region produces 2.8 million hectolitres of wine, with a large majority of red wines (80%), followed by rosé wines (14%) and white wines (6%).
