How do I buy a forest?

Buying a forest is a specific kind of property investment. You can acquire it in your own name or through a company.

The Groupement Foncier Forestier is a type of non-trading property company that is specifically designed for forest purchases, and which allows you to benefit from tax advantages: this investment can enable you to reduce the amount of your Impôt sur la Fortune Immobilière (property wealth tax) as well as your inheritance or gift tax. You can also benefit from financial aid for the management of your forest, for planting, upkeep and professional assistance in implementing your sustainable management plan.

We have devoted a number of articles in our blog to the subject of forests, and in particular to the stages in the life of a forestry investment:

They will provide you with all the information you need about the specific tax aspects of a forestry investment, as well as the principles of a Management Plan.

  • 67% hardwood stands
  • 21% coniferous
  • 12% mixed stands

French forests are also rich in biodiversity, with 138 species of tree, 73 species of mammal and 120 species of bird. Beneficial for the environment, they capture the equivalent of 15% of the country's annual CO2 emissions.

Who owns forests in France?

Almost 13 million hectares of woods and forests belong to private forest owners (3 million owners). The State, local authorities and public establishments own more than 4 million hectares.

Where are France's forests located?

The most wooded regions in mainland France are Corsica, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur and Bourgogne-Franche-Comté. There are almost 130 species of wood in France, divided between hardwoods (67% of the stand), conifers (21%) and mixed (12%). The largest state-owned forests in France are the Orléans forest (35,000 ha) and the Landes forest (25,000 ha).

In the French overseas departments and territories, French Guiana comes first, followed by Réunion and Guadeloupe.
