The versatility of mixed livestock farms

As their name suggests, mixed livestock farms are multi-purpose, as they are home to both animals and crops intended either for feeding the animals or for sale.

They are therefore mixed farms that you can choose to specialise in one or more agricultural productions, or to maintain these 2 complementary activities.

Why combine crops and livestock on the same farm?

Combining animal and plant production is a step towards agro-ecology, when animals are fed by crops and meadows, which are in turn fertilised by their excrement.

It is therefore an economic system with a future in terms of environmental issues.

A number of advantages have been identified for mixed farming systems:

  • Improved food self-sufficiency for livestock,
  • Crop rotation that facilitates weed management,
  • A contribution of organic matter and intercropping favourable to soil life,
  • Greater nitrogen autonomy for crops,
  • Carbon storage in the soil,
  • greatly reduced erosion.
  • And finally, greater system resilience and financial security through savings on costs.

Self-producing your own animal feed reduces your dependence on outside suppliers and on highly volatile prices. The proximity of your crops means you can reduce transport, which is both costly and time-consuming.

Mixed farms often combine ruminant farming (beef cattle, dairy cattle, sheep, goats, etc.) with a rotation of crops mainly intended for animal feed (meadows, cereals, etc.).

How do you choose a mixed livestock farm?

First of all, you need to define your farming project and choose the main livestock farm you want to set up.

The size of the farm you want to set up is crucial, both in terms of the number of hectares of land and the number of animals. You need to find a balance between the volume of work required and your availability (including employees if necessary).

Note that you are not obliged to buy the entire farm area. You can buy farmland and also rent land under a rural lease.

You should then carry out a 1st financial approach to check the feasibility of your project in terms of investment and financing. And the ability of your future farm to generate sufficient income to cover your expenses, annual repayments and remuneration.

Mixed farming operations very often include a house. The presence of a house often increases the purchase price, but meets the need for accommodation on the production site.
